Verona University Vol. 9, 2025: Romanticism and/in Periodicals
In the context of the various cultural and editorial dynamics that facilitated the development of European Romanticism, the spreading of periodicals played a prominent role. Compared to the more traditional book production, the various literary and lifestyle magazines as well as daily newspapers allowed more immediate access to the latest theories, debates, criticism, and reviews, not to mention some works in prose or poetry made available through serial publication. This phenomenon affects the most industrialized European countries, and therefore those with a well- established ‘cultural industry’, substantially in the same way. The confrontation between Classicism and the nascent Romanticism, between deism and Christianity, the debt to the Enlightenment, the role of the emerging bourgeoisie and the new liberal instances, the questions related to the concept of national unity: these are all issues that are widely present in periodical publications in Italian (Conciliatore, Antologia, Politecnico), French (L'Artiste; Revue et Gazette musicale; Revue des deux mondes), German (Göttingische Gelehrte Anzeigen; Athenäum; Europa), English (The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction; The Literary Gazette, and Journal of Belles Lettres, Arts, Sciences; The Literary Chronicle), Spanish (El Diario mercantil; El Artista; El Europeo), and Russian (Mnemozina; Poljarnaja zvezda; Sovremennik).
With this Call for Papers, we would like to address scholars interested in the topic, who would like to analyze the role played by various kinds of periodicals in the elaboration and dissemination of Romantic literary theory and production.
Possible lines of research are the following:
- Foundation and history of individual periodicals expressly related to the Romantic phenomenon;
- Role and function of periodicals in the context of Romanticism;
- The most representative genres of Romanticism-related periodical publications (essays, pamphlets, short stories, etc.);
- The relationship between the writer(s) and the publisher(s)/editor(s) of a periodical;
- The theoretical debates on Romanticism (more or less explicitly) held in periodicals;
- The space dedicated to the different ‘genres’, both literary and non-literary (theatre, the visual arts, dance), treated in general magazines or in specialized periodicals;
- Romanticism in ‘women’s’ journals, mostly written by women journalists or writers (La Gazette des femmes, 1841-1847) or intended for a female readership (Journal des dames et des modes, with adequate space devoted to Romantic literature, and its reception, without neglecting the performances).
The articles will be published in the vol. IX of Romanticismi, la rivista del C.R.I.E.R. during the year 2025. The languages accepted for contributions are: Italian, French, German, Spanish, and English.
